How Do You Know Whether You Have Rosacea

Aug 28, 2010

Do you have red swollen bumps on your face? Do not confuse it with acne or any other skin disease. Most probably, you are suffering from rosacea, which is not a harmful skin disease but should not be left untreated. Before you get into the treatment part, make sure you recognize the signs and symptoms of this inflammatory skin condition. The most common symptoms and signs of rosacea include reddish areas on the face and tiny red pustules or bumps on the forehead, nose, chin, cheeks, and nose. The other symptoms are rhinophyma or an inflamed bulbous nose, small noticeable blood vessels on the cheeks and nose, and a burning sensation in the eyes or ocular rosacea. People affected with rosacea generally have a tendency to easily blush or flush.

Another thing that one needs to learn about rosacea is that it normally occurs in three different phases. The first phase is the pre-rosacea phase. In this phase, you may get rosasea in the form of a tendency to get just blush or flush very easily. However, this can progress to very stubborn redness in the very central part of the face, especially the nose. The redness on the face is caused due to dilation of the blood vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin.

The next phase of rosacea is Vascular rosacea. In this stage, the various symptoms and signs of rosacea get worse. One can notice little blood vessels swelling on the cheeks and nose and becoming very prominent. This condition is known as telangiectasia. The third phase of this condition is inflammatory rosacea. In this case, tiny pustules or red bumps can appear and they spread throughout the cheeks, chin, forehead, and nose.

In rare cases, the condition can get very severe and the sebaceous glands in the cheeks and nose may get enlarged, thereby producing a swelling of tissue throughout the area of the nose. This is known as rhinophyma. This kind of complication is quite commonly seen in men and it progresses gradually over a number of years. Almost fifty percent of the people affected with rosacea may also suffer from a condition in which the inner part of the eyelids get inflamed and sometimes even look scaly.

In order to successfully treat rosacea, a person needs to first distinguish between acne and rosacea. The treatments are also different for both. Treatments designed for acne should not be tried for rosacea. Such products include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, chemical peels, acne peels, topical azelaic acid, and alpha hydroxy acids. These can be quite harmful for skin affected with rosacea.

All sorts of modern medicines for treating rosacea are available in local drugstores. Zenmed® has effective Rosacea Skin Support System that can solve this skin disease. Those who have tried in vain using traditional techniques to treat rosacea, have benefited from the systems. There are two separate products for the treatment of rosacea by this company – one is only for oily skin and the other is to tackle the rosacea affecting dry skin.
