Suffering From Rosacea?

In recent surveys by the National Rosacea Society, nearly 70 percent of rosacea patients said this condition had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem, and 41 percent reported it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements. Among rosacea patients with severe symptoms, nearly 70 percent said the disorder had adversely affected their professional interactions, and nearly 30 percent said they had even missed work because of their condition.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a facial rash that occurs in middle-aged men and women. It may be transient, recurrent or persistent. The cause of rosacea is unknown and it affects people mainly in their 30s and 40s. Rosacea used to be called 'acne rosacea' but it is quite different from acne. The red spots (papules) and sometimes pustules are dome-shaped rather than pointed and there are no blackheads, whiteheads, deep cysts, or lumps. Sometimes the affected skin is swollen and hot. Rosacea affects the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead - rarely it involves the trunk and upper limbs. It may be aggravated by facial creams or oils, topical steroids , diet, and excessive sun exposure.

To understand adult rosacea skincare symptoms you should know that rosacea is often accompanied by other features:

  • Frequent blushing or flushing
  • A red face due to persistent redness and/or telangiectasia (red veins).
  • Red, sore or gritty eyelids including papules and styes.
  • Symptoms are often aggravated by sun exposure and hot and spicy food or drink.
  • The skin may be very sensitive; burning and stinging, especially with make-up, sunscreens and so on.
  • The affected areas may also look and feel dry, and may be accompanied by seborrhoeic dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis.

Without treatment, some cases of rosacea can cause knobby bumps on the nose and cheeks that can multiply. This is advanced rosacea, known as rhinophyma(“ry-no-FY-muh”). Over time, it can give the nose a swollen, waxy look. But most cases of rosacea don't progress this far.

Rosacea may occasionally be confused with other facial rashes including:

  • Acne vulgaris
  • Pyoderma faciale
  • Steroid rosacea
  • Perioral dermatitis
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Avoid factors that increase your core body temperature:

  • Exposure to weather - sun, cold, wind
  • Hot food, hot drinks, and alcohol
  • Exercise (you should exercise in cool surroundings and avoid dehydration)
  • Medications (you should avoid vasodilating drugs, that is, drugs that expand your blood vessels, and topical steroids)
  • Cosmetics (you should avoid greasy, drying, or perfumed products)

Daily skin care:

  • Avoid hot water, loofahs, and rough towels
  • Avoid toners, exfoliating agents, and astringents
  • Dandruff – Rosacea frequently coexists with sebhorreic dermatitis or dandruff
Cosmetics:
  • Anti-redness cream or cosmetic cover-up can be helpful to some patients with rosacea
